Sheffield United finally appear to be on the right path with Chris Wilder in charge.

The Blades have won three games on the spin in the second-tier to propel themselves out of the bottom three and up to 19th in the table.

It included two thumping 3-0 wins over Sheffield Wednesday and Portsmouth, before edging Leicester City 3-2 after taking a three-goal lead at the break in the East Midlands.

The Yorkshire outfit sit 10 points away from the top six, but that gap could be bridged further if they keep up the impressive run of form and performances they have produced recently.

It now seems like Sheffield United are clicking and getting back to the ways under Wilder that saw the club reach the play-off final last term, and confidence will only exude as they prepare to face high-flying Stoke City at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Wilder confirmed the Yorkshire outfit are ramping up efforts to get vital first-team players Tyrese Campbell and Gus Hamer to extend their stays at Bramall Lane.

As per a report by the Sheffield Star, the club have reportedly made contact with the representatives of Campbell and Hamer, as the duo enter the final 18 months of their current deals, which are currently set to expire in the summer of 2027.

With this news in mind, FLW’s Sheffield United fan pundit has given his thoughts on whether the club will agree new contracts with the duo.

Speaking to Football League World, Sheffield United fan pundit Jimmy (AKA Blades Ramble) outlined his positivity to see the Blades attempting to keep hold of two of their most important players, but admitted the club may need to convince Gus Hamer the most to sign on the dotted line.

Jimmy said: “It’s really positive news for United that we’re looking to extend the contracts of both Tyrese Campbell and Gus Hamer, who are two really important players for us, particularly Hamer, but Campbell has certainly played his part since he joined the Blades.

“I wouldn’t expect anything less than us to try and renew if I’m honest, so while it’s good to hear, it’s not surprising and doesn’t mean we’ve made any progress with those so far.

"It will definitely be a huge boost to us if they were to sign the new deals, just in terms of securing assets of the football club and retaining value in the squad.

“As to whether I think they’ll both sign, I think Campbell will sign, but it’s yet to be seen yet whether Hamer signs. I think a lot will depend on the ambition we show, perhaps in January, in terms of how we want to kick on as a football club.

“I certainly hope so, but only time will tell.”

It goes without saying that Sheffield United should be prioritising the futures of Gus Hamer and Tyrese Campbell given how influential they’ve been at Bramall Lane.

The duo have both played their best football under the guidance of Wilder, with Campbell netting 10 times last season and already having five to his name this campaign, while Hamer was touted for a move to the Premier League the summer gone following his impact in getting the Blades to the play-off final last season.

In a report by the Yorkshire Post, Wilder views Campbell to be a player who can stretch defences by running the channels after signing a much-needed natural number nine in Patrick Bamford, so that could be his role moving forward.

If he is to be put over to the left flank, he would surely be first-choice to gain regular minutes in a side that should be situating themselves towards the top end of the Championship, so you would expect that he would comfortably extend his stay with such a guarantee of playing time.

Our Sheffield United fan pundit is correct to have some doubt over Hamer though, purely because he had that interest from the top-flight, and is still a player who has the quality to succeed at the top of the English game despite the Blades’ poor start to the campaign.

By hook or by crook, the hierarchy must get Hamer to sign that extension, and if both deals can be agreed, then there will be so much optimism that the club can put this bad patch behind them and get back to challenging for promotion to the big time with a strong squad.
