Leeds United’s free transfer business has been mixed, yet two summer signings are already justifying the gamble. Lukas Nmecha has scored four goals, but strike partner Dominic Calvert-Lewin has taken the spotlight.
The 28-year-old left Everton amid fitness doubts, has not missed a match since his Premier League debut in August, and has six goals in his last five appearances. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, if this form continues he could rank among Leeds’ best recent freebies, although a club legend still leads.
The ranking opens with Ouasim Bouy, who arrived from Juventus in 2017 on a four-year deal, never played, and lost his squad number when Marcelo Bielsa took over, leaving in 2021.
Next comes Madger Gomes, limited to two EFL Cup ties after joining from Liverpool’s academy in 2017, then left inside 12 months for Sochaux. Tommaso Bianchi signed in 2014 under Massimo Cellino, played 26 games, then two knee injuries wrecked consecutive seasons before a move to Ascoli.
Noel Hunt arrived from Reading in 2013 with a scoring reputation, failed to net in 22 appearances, and was released in January 2015, six months early.
Goalkeeper Stuart Taylor joined in 2014 seeking first-choice status, but sat behind Marco Silvestri, played five times, then left for Southampton after one season.
Lee Erwin arrived from Motherwell, had a 28-day loan at Bury, then made 12 appearances across two seasons without scoring. He scored a couple in pre-season in 2017 but Thomas Christiansen moved him on to Kilmarnock.
