Sean Longstaff will miss Leeds United’s trip to Sunderland on Sunday, the midfielder still sidelined by a calf problem after sitting out the December upturn.

Initially pencilled in for early January, there had been faint hope of a festive cameo on Wearside, but it has come too soon. According to Leeds Live, Lukas Nmecha is making encouraging progress after a hamstring issue picked up in the win over Chelsea.

The German has missed the past two matches and is hoped to rejoin first-team training later this week. If he is back before Saturday’s final session, he would be expected to make the travelling squad.

Daniel Farke said there is no chance for Longstaff or Daniel James, adding that Nmecha has only a small chance to be involved and is the sole long-term absentee who could feature.

Farke said the team know it is a long road, remain grounded and are working hard to stay competitive ahead of the weekend.
