Leeds United have two players still involved at the World Cup in North America, with two already out as the knockout phase gathers pace. None are in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.
Brenden Aaronson has largely been used from the bench. He started the final group game against Türkiye with qualification already sealed, then returned to the bench as the USA beat Bosnia 2-0 in the Round of 32. Mauricio Pochettino’s side face Belgium next Tuesday morning.
Noah Okafor made the squad and, after going unused in the groups, featured late as Switzerland closed out a 2-0 Round of 32 win over Algeria, their first World Cup knockout victory since 1938. They meet either Colombia or Ghana in Vancouver on Tuesday, 7 July. The 26-year-old will be pushing for more minutes.
Gabriel Gudmundsson played every match for Sweden, advancing from the group. France ended their campaign with a dominant 3-0 win in the Round of 32 on Tuesday.
Ao Tanaka sat out Japan’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands, starred in the 4-0 win over Tunisia and kept his place for the 1-1 with Sweden. From the bench against Brazil, he was dispossessed by Rayan before Bruno Guimaraes set up Gabriel Martinelli for a 95th-minute winner.
“The frustration and remorse have been there, and I think that won't change going forward. My ability was simply lacking.” Kyodo News carried the interview.
