Celtic moved level on points with Hearts on an emotional night at Celtic Park. The Scottish Champions ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a brave first half header from Daizen Maeda in what is likely to be a forgettable game.
The night was significant, however, as it closed the chapter of Martin O’Neill’s interim manager stint. The Irishman came in with Hearts holding a commanding lead at the summit of the Scottish Premiership table. Although, the legendary manager was flawless in the league, winning five in a row and cutting the gap until tonight, Celtic pulled level with Hearts.
The 73-year-old’s return was questioned in some quarters but any doubts were dismissed by the charisma and character of a true Celtic icon.
It was an emotional farewell by O’Neill, who said he’d had the time of his life before thanking the Celtic support.
There was definitely a sadness around the ground to see MON depart, especially given his previous comments about wanting to make the Cup Final. Albeit, the club have been targeting their new permanent manager and confirmed the appointment on Wednesday evening.
Wilfried Nancy was announced shortly before the game and the 48-year-old will take charge of the weekend’s meeting with Hearts. It is fair to say that the job is a lot more attractive a proposition now that O’Neill has worked some magic in his interim spell. Celtic are in a Cup Final, are in contention in the Europa League and are now back level at the top of the league.
There would be huge merit in getting MON on the Celtic Board and allowing his influence to be felt at the club longterm. This would allow for the club legend to offer assistance at various levels throughout the club while recognising his contribution to the club by giving him a place on the board, something that, historically, the club failed to do with Jock Stein.
Credit to MON, Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham for all their efforts in the last six weeks as they stepped in and steadied the ship.
