Leicester City have been linked with a potential move for Rennes midfielder Glen Kamara in the January transfer window.

It has been reported by French outlet Foot Mercato that the 29-year-old is on the Foxes’ radar, as they consider their options for the winter market.

Martí Cifuentes’ side are targeting promotion to the Premier League this year, so could use the new year to strengthen their chances of a top flight return.

However, they face competition from rivals Ipswich Town, as well as Ligue 1 side Nice, in the race to sign Kamara.

The Finland international previously spent one season in the Championship, playing 37 times as Leeds United finished third in the table.

Midfield is not a priority at Leicester

When asked about the potential signing of Kamara, FLW’s Leicester fan pundit Louchlainn Martin claimed that Kamara could be a solid player at this level but that midfield isn’t a priority position that the club have to strengthen.

He believes that a left-back and a striker are far more important areas to improve in January, citing the number of midfielders already in Cifuentes’ squad.

“I’ve seen the rumours linking Leicester with Glen Kamara, I think he’s a pretty solid midfielder at Championship level,” Martin told Football League World.

“I’m not sure it’s actually the priority for Leicester and where we should go.

“I think we certainly need a left-back, I think that should be one of the priorities this season, I think we also need a striker if that’s doable.

“Obviously we have Ayew, Daka and Carranza on loan, but only one goal scored between the three so far this season.

“Whereas I think in midfield our options are pretty strong at the minute with Harry Winks, Boubakary Soumaré, Jordan James, Oliver Skipp and a couple others as well.

“So, I think I would welcome the signing depending on the price, but it certainly shouldn't be prioritised by the club.

“I think there are other areas we could improve on ahead of that.”

Kamara has struggled for form since joining Rennes in the summer of 2024, having made a total of just 13 appearances in Ligue 1.

The midfielder went out on loan to Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab in January 2025, where he made 13 appearances in the Pro League before returning to France.

But he has yet to feature for Rennes this campaign, with it being claimed he could be available for €3 (£2.6) million.

Next up for third place Leicester is a home clash against Portsmouth on Saturday in a 7.45pm kick-off.

Glen Kamara deal shouldn’t be a priority for Leicester

Leicester have enough midfield options that it’s not an area that should really be prioritised in the January market.

Kamara has a proven track record in the Championship from his season at Elland Road, and there’s no doubt he’d be a solid addition to any side at this level.

There should be some wariness over his lack of game time in France, which could put some clubs off a permanent move.

If Kamara is available on loan, then perhaps adding him for some depth could prove a solid piece of business, but it’s not something Leicester should put a lot of resources into in order to get over the line.
