Leicester City are among a host of clubs tracking Brighton winger Tommy Watson in the summer transfer window.

Leicester City are embarking on a crucial summer transfer window as they look to bounce back to the Championship following successive relegations.

The Foxes will play in the third tier for just the second time in their history, and there will be pressure on new boss Russell Martin to deliver immediate success. The ex-Rangers chief is a divisive figure in the game, but he will hope to restore his reputation after a difficult spell at Ibrox.

Yet, to do that, it’s clear a lot of work is required in the market, and Leicester will have to move players on as they deal with the financial reality of going from the Premier League to League One in a few years.

Leicester City told to finalise Tommy Watson transfer

The deals have already started at the King Power Stadium, with Jeremy Monga a high-profile exit, as he secured a switch to Man City.

It’s obviously a blow for the Foxes to lose the exciting talent, but the funds will help Martin rebuild the squad, and the club have been linked with a replacement, as it has been claimed they are keen on Brighton’s Tommy Watson.

The 20-year-old came through the ranks at Sunderland, and he scored the play-off final winner that took the club to the Premier League.

However, Watson had already agreed to join Brighton, but the move to the Seagulls hasn’t gone to plan so far, and he spent the second half of last season with Millwall, but he struggled to get a regular place in the XI.

Therefore, another temporary move is inevitable, and whilst Leicester are keen on Watson, they face competition from a host of Championship clubs.

It would be a difficult one for the Foxes to finalise, but, when asked by FLW about whether Watson would be a good addition, Leicester fan pundit Jamie Preston admitted he would be pleased if they could get this over the line.

I don’t really know a lot about him. I know he’s a winger, he’s direct, he will go to the byline. He has been out on loan at Millwall, he has played for England at youth level.

So, with the loss of Jeremy Monga, and Fatawu is likely to leave, I think Watson would be an ideal replacement. He’s young, youthful and wants to learn his trade. Hopefully, he gets better and better, and we’d probably get the best out of him, so it would be a decent loan for us in League One.”

Tommy Watson would be a statement signing for Leicester City

There’s no denying that Watson’s career hasn’t taken off in the way many expected after he scored the goal that took Sunderland to the Premier League.

But, it’s important to remember just how young he is, and he will have learned a lot from the loan spell at Millwall, even if it had been frustrating not to play as much as he would’ve wanted.

In theory, Leicester should have little chance of signing Watson given the Championship interest, but you could make a case to say that moving to the Foxes is just what he needs at this stage of his development.

Firstly, Watson would be almost certain to play week in, week out for Leicester, which is going to be the priority for Brighton and the player, as he won’t want to be sitting on the bench again.

As well as that, Martin’s style may appeal as well. Leicester are likely to dominate possession and play attacking football, so it could be the ideal destination for Watson to rediscover his best form and his confidence.

Obviously, this won’t be an easy deal for Leicester to do, but it shows they are aiming high this window, and it would be a real coup if they did manage to pull it off.
