FLW's Foxes Fan Pundit shares his thoughts on Matty Young joining the East Midlands outfit on loan this summer
Leicester City appear to be getting their summer transfer plans underway as they prepare for life in League One for the first time since 2009.
The Foxes have been linked with a move to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young on loan, according to Sky Sports, with the 19-year-old catching the eye after two impressive loan stints at Salford City in League Two.
Sheffield Wednesday - who, of course, were also relegated from the Championship this past season - are believed to be competing for Young's signature as well.
However, from a Leicester perspective, there's a fair bit of caution over the potential deal...

FLW’s Leicester City Fan Pundit, Jamie Preston, has been clear about where he stands on his club’s potential pursuit of Matty Young.
"To be honest, I haven't really heard of Matty Young from Sunderland," Jamie told FLW.
The Fan Pundit added, "But as for a keeper, I think you need a bit of experience. Throwing a young 19-year-old into League One could make him or break him."
Jamie then noted that if Bosnian international Asmir Begovic signs an extension, the Foxes already have two goalkeepers vying for the number one shirt heading into next season, with the other being Jacob Stolarczyk.
He said, "We’ve got two keepers already, Jacob Stolarczyk and Asmir Begovic - who’s just about to sign a new one-year contract for us.
"I think we need the experience and the know-how of games more than a young, inexperienced keeper. Keepers don’t really come to the front until they’re 26, 27, and then they play a lot longer than outfield players."
Despite Jamie's reservations, there is no shortage of evidence that Matty Young is a genuinely exciting prospect.
The Sunderland academy product, who has been with the club since the age of seven, completed back-to-back season-long loans at Salford City, first joining in July 2024, then returning for a second spell in July 2025.
In his debut campaign at the Peninsula Stadium, Young made 27 appearances in all competitions, and his form caught the attention of those far beyond League Two, including, reportedly, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola ahead of their FA Cup third-round meeting.
As for 25/26, Young played 50 times for Salford across all competitions, recording 15 clean sheets in the league and a save percentage of 71.1%. Those numbers earned him a nomination for the EFL League Two Young Player of the Season award.

Even still, Jamie isn’t too convinced. He continued by telling FLW, “Having an inexperienced goalkeeper - he might have been on loan at Salford in League Two - but at Leicester, I can’t see having a young, inexperienced keeper working for us.
"I think it’ll be too much of a risk to drag him in and throw him into a hornets nest really at Leicester. For me, we’ll stick with what we’ve got keeper wise," the Fan Pundit concluded.
As for the earlier mentioned Stolarczyk and Begovic - the Pole made 36 league appearances and conceded 47 goals, keeping just six clean sheets. Begovic, who turns 39 on 20th June, failed to keep a single clean sheet in the few games he played.
Whether Leicester ultimately decides that Stolarczyk and Begovic represent sufficient cover for a League One campaign remains to be seen.
But if Jamie's view is anything to go by, the East Midlands outfit's fanbase is far from convinced that Matty Young is the answer at this particular moment in time.
