Among their league opponents will be League Two winners Bromley, who they have never faced in a competitive match. They will also meet fellow promoted side Cambridge for the first time in more than 30 years, and take on Mansfield and Wimbledon for the first time in more than 20 years.

The Carabao Cup first round will serve as next season’s curtain-raiser. Ties are scheduled for the weekend of August 7-9, with the opening league fixtures the following weekend, August 14-16.

City’s Under-21s have featured in the EFL Trophy for much of the past decade, but next season the first team will play in the Vertu Trophy. The three-match group stage will pair City with two clubs from Leagues One and Two, plus an Under-21s side from a Premier League or Championship club. Their opening Vertu Trophy fixture is due in the week commencing September 21.
