Leicester City’s next manager, six possible routes

Gary Rowett’s contract has ended, leaving Leicester City to decide who leads them in League One next season. LeicesterMercury.co.uk notes six possible routes as the club seek a one-season stay in the third tier.

An experienced head, Rowett’s bracket, brings over a decade of EFL know-how and fewer teething issues, but little spark. A League One specialist is another path. Darren Ferguson owns three promotions and three play-off defeats with Peterborough, yet was sacked last October with Posh bottom.

An overlooked high-achiever could appeal. Dave Challinor’s Stockport finished third, and his teams have reached at least the play-offs in all 15 seasons. The gamble is whether overachievers’ methods scale to a club expected to dominate.

A former City player would be the romantic choice. Richie Wellens has kept Leyton Orient up and did not spare his squad after the finale. Christian Fuchs, a title-winner, has steered Newport County away from League Two relegation in his first job.

Backing an up-and-coming coach mirrors recent routes for Birmingham and Cardiff, who returned at the first attempt with possession-first hires. Chris Davies and Brian Barry-Murphy, both with City ties and under-21 or assistant backgrounds, fit that template, as did Enzo Maresca.

An overseas manager would break with precedent, City have never appointed one without English coaching experience. NEC Nijmegen’s Dick Schreuder has impressed with an attacking style, though adaptation is a concern. With James McCarron involved, an external pick feels likelier, despite his Lommel hires being English, Steve Bould then Lee Johnson.
