Clément Lenglet has been identified by Benfica to replace Nicolás Otamendi at centre-back. According to Glorioso 1904, the 31-year-old is expected to sign a two-year contract.

Although under contract with Atlético de Madrid until 2028, he was not among Diego Simeone’s preferred options. He often sat behind Robin Le Normand, Marc Pubill, David Hancko and José María Giménez in the pecking order.

After a positive first season in Madrid, with 33 appearances, three goals and two assists, his influence waned the following year. The most recent campaign also brought difficult moments.

In a high-profile quarter-final second leg, he lost possession to Lamine Yamal in the build-up, allowing Barcelona to reduce the deficit.

Months earlier he had been sent off away to Celta de Vigo after two yellow cards. The decision prompted strong protests from Simeone, who publicly challenged the officiating.

Content in Madrid and not pushing to leave, Lenglet is nevertheless close to a new challenge. The report added that Atlético had considered a move to Real Sociedad, but it did not progress.
