For 18-year-old Lennart Karl, Bayern Munich’s Champions League quarter-final first leg at Real Madrid on Tuesday carries added meaning, given his long-held admiration for the club and the Santiago Bernabéu.
According to BuLi News, the forward has described Real as his dream club and said he was looking forward to the meeting, speaking after Bayern’s 4-0 win over Union Berlin last month. He praised the stadium and said he was simply excited to play.
This will not be his first time at the Bernabéu. As a 10-year-old he visited while on trial with Real Madrid, and he has since admitted he scarcely remembers the experience.
Karl caused a stir in January when he said that, while Bayern are a very big club and playing there is a dream, he definitely wants to go to Real Madrid one day, adding that it should remain between them.
Bayern’s hierarchy quickly played down the remarks, pointing to his age and stressing that the talented attacker remains fully committed to the Bavarian club.
