RC Lens prioritised upgrading La Gaillette, the club’s training centre, over the summer despite French football’s financial strain. L'Équipe reports that the club invested seven million euros in the site in Avion, where it has been based since 2002.

Managing director Benjamin Parrot, formerly head of communications and overseeing strategic projects, said the club had effectively chosen to forgo a transfer to invest in itself.

The renovation formed a key pillar of Lens’s three-year action plan.

On Monday lunchtime, 2018 World Cup winner Raphaël Varane inaugurated the pitch bearing his name at La Gaillette.

The Raphaël Varane pitch is the showpiece of the revamped complex.
