Leo Messi became the FIFA World Cup™’s all-time leading men’s goalscorer this evening, scoring his 17th and 18th goals to seal Argentina’s 2-0 group-stage win over Austria.

He surpassed former Germany forward Miroslav Klose, who previously held the record with 16. Inter Miami notes that the club captain has added another milestone to a career already laden with honours.

Messi opened the 2026 campaign with a hat-trick in a first-round win over Algeria. He leads the tournament scoring with five goals from Argentina’s first two matches. The result also secured La Albiceleste’s place in the Round of 32.

This is his sixth FIFA World Cup™ campaign, making him the first men’s player to appear in six editions (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026).

The achievement further underlines his status among the game’s greats. As Argentina advance to the knockout rounds, he will have the opportunity to keep stretching the record.
