Italian defender Giovanni Leoni sent a heartfelt thanks to everyone who sent messages after his serious injury for Liverpool. ‘It wasn’t the debut I always dreamed of.’
Although there is no formal statement yet from the club, multiple Italian media sources are confirming the diagnosis is a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
The Corriere dello Sport suggests his lay-off could be as much as nine months, including the time required for a full rehabilitation and return to form, but this type of injury generally requires six months out.

Meanwhile, Leoni has taken to social media to send a message following that painful setback.
“I want to sincerely thank every single person who has shown me support in this difficult moment.
“It wasn’t the debut I had always dreamed of, but I will give everything to be back playing in this magical stadium as soon as possible. Thank you so much!”

The messages have indeed poured in from all over, including his former club Parma, who sent a touching show of support.
“Forza Giovanni! We are profoundly sad to hear of your injury. All the Club and the Gialloblu family wish you a rapid and relaxed recovery.”

There are growing reports that Liverpool will make the most of the new rules on Champions League lists in order to replace Leoni with fellow Italian Federico Chiesa.
This would not have been possible in previous seasons, but now players with long-term injuries can be replaced during the league phase.
