Heidenheim have completed the loan signing of Stuttgart defender Leonidas Stergiou.

The move had been in the works for some time but was delayed while head coach Sebastian Hoeneß managed a thin defensive group. Stuttgart, winners of both fixtures since the 2026 Bundesliga restart, are now content with a back four of Josha Vagnoman, Ramon Hendriks, Jeff Chabot and Maximilian Mittelstädt.

With Stergiou on board, Heidenheim have added a right back and a left back in this January window. The Swiss can cover on the right, while Hoffenheim reservist Hennes Behrens reinforces the left.

Stergiou often operated at centre-back under Hoeneß during his 18 appearances across all competitions last season. This year, the 23-year-old has also featured in central defence for Stuttgart’s reserves.

Club figures have highlighted Stergiou’s Bundesliga know-how and experience for his age, as well as his mentality to make an immediate impact. The player views the switch as a chance to regain regular minutes and to help Heidenheim stay in the league.
