Everton manager Brian Sørensen says that there is no need to panic off the back of his side’s challenging start to the season.

The Blue Girls were tipped to do well this season but they have taken just four points from their opening six Barclays Women’s Super League fixtures.

Injuries have not helped Everton’s progression and when speaking in a club press conference, manager Sørensen highlighted the impact that a lack of player availability has on the consistency of the team.

“It’s a process and we are working on a lot of things, trying to get things right with a new team,” Sørensen said. “I’ve seen progress and it’s just about building on that.

“It’s been challenging with all of the injuries and not having any consistency in player selection. Hopefully, we are moving on an upward spiral now rather than a down in the last block and we get people back, so that we can build on that consistency.

“For me, it’s about the process, getting better day-by-day. The girls are back in after the international break and they’re feeling really good, so we are looking forward to the Villa game. We haven’t had the start that we would’ve liked but we are two points behind Villa. It’s fine margins but let’s just trust the process and make sure we put in a performance.”

Everton sit in tenth position in the league table ahead of this weekend’s trip to Aston Villa but Sørensen insists that there’s no panic and that rankings only matter after 22 games.

He said “For me, there’s no panic, it’s still so early in the season. Let’s see where we are at when we get to May but for now, it’s just about working hard, making sure that we get the details right and getting better at what we want to be better at.”

Latest opponents Aston Villa have lost just once so far this season and Sørensen said that his side must get things right at both ends of the pitch.

He said “We have to take our chances and defensively, we will have to be spot on. Last year, we went to Villa straight after an international break and we controlled the game really well. We took our chances and it’s going to be similar; we need to control the game defensively and then we need to take the chances if they’re given to us.

“Villa are a good team with good young players and very experienced players. They’ve got a good mix and we really look forward to the challenge.”

Everton’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Aston Villa kicks-off at 12pm on Sunday afternoon.
