Brighton and Hove Albion’s CEO was put on the spot regarding Manchester United’s rumoured approach for Carlos Baleba.

David Ornstein revealed yesterday that the Red Devils had ignited their pursuit of Baleba, sending a proposal worth £65 million (£60m plus £5m in add-ons) to Brighton and Hove Albion.

What did Brighton’s CEO have to say about Baleba?

Although the offer falls below the Seagulls’ valuation, there is optimism a deal can be agreed.

When asked about the speculation, CEO Paul Barber said: “It’s not something that I can talk about right now. This time of year, we’re always going to be subject to bids for our players.

“Nothing really to say on Carlos at the moment, other than that he’s a hugely talented young midfielder, who’s done really well for us and has attracted interest from some of the biggest clubs in the world now for a couple of years. So, let’s see where we go.”

United had also established their interest in signing Baleba this time last year, but saw their attempts rebuffed by Brighton, who were adamant he was staying put.

Baleba on cusp of United move

Now, however, it does look as though the 22-year-old Cameroonian will be on the move.

Baleba has been actively pushing behind the scenes to make the switch to Old Trafford ever since he first learned of their interest.

He is poised to join Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to complete United’s midfield rebuild this summer, with all three boasting ample Premier League experience.

When a new midfielder is eventually brought in, it’s thought INEOS will then turn their attention to a left-back and, perhaps, even a striker.

Joshua Zirkzee faces an uncertain future in the final fortnight of the window. If he does depart, a new forward will almost certainly be signed.
