There’s been a lot of quite justified griping about the construction of Chelsea’s squad over the last few years, as the Blues have bought almost exclusively young players, and suffered the consequences with some tough seasons.

But with a solid campaign in the books, a lot of them are rapidly gaining that experience they need, and few of them have developed faster than Levi Colwill.
He had one season with Brighton in the Premier League to his name when he returned to play semi regularly under Mauricio Pochettino, but last season was his first as a real regular for his boyhood team. Now, a year on, he’s a guaranteed starter and leader in the team. When we talk about central defenders being linked with a summer move, it’s to play with Levi, not replace him.
He’s always been a phenomenally good talker when it comes to dealing with the media. and now his credentials are matching his eloquence. He spoke last night after an important Club World Cup opening win for the Blues against LAFC.
“The most important thing was to get the win and that’s what we have done. We picked and chose our moments where we could attack and where we could keep the ball. It wasn’t the perfect performance, but in tournament football, you just need to win,” the defender told the club’s official website.
“We’re coming up against different teams and that will be a huge challenge, but we’re going to enjoy it and learn different things. The tournament has kicked off, and our focus is on the next game now.”
Spoken like a true media trained pro. It’s not just passing out from the back that these boys learn in their years at Cobham.
