A dream end to this transfer window for Manchester United could arrive if INEOS manage to complete a deal for Lewis Hall.

This summer’s priority for the 20-time English champions was to overhaul the midfield.

Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba represent a 10-out-of-10 midfield rebuild. With the centre of the park bolstered, Michael Carrick now has a better team to turn things around after a disappointing start against Hull.

However, he could have his best team yet if INEOS sign him a left-back before transfer deadline day. United cannot rely on Luke Shaw to play every game next season as he did last season, and beyond that, he is slowly proving he is not the best left-back option.

Carrick wants his left-back to overlap and join the attack while the left winger tucks in, but with Luke Shaw’s legs gone, he cannot execute this tactical plan perfectly.

Opting for different options at left-back is therefore necessary, and that is where Hall comes in.

Lewis Hall a dream target

The Newcastle United star embodies the kind of left-back Carrick wants for his system.

His ability to overlap, underlap or invert makes him a complete fullback, while his history as a midfielder and technical ability see him excel at dribbling out of tight spaces and operating as a playmaker from deep.

Young and athletic, Hall could be the perfect Shaw alternative, turning United’s left-back spot from a point of weakness into a strength.

Knowing how revolutionary he can be is one thing, however; getting him on board is another. Newcastle are trying hard to resist a potential Hall exit, and they are even willing to offer him a bumper deal and a place in their leadership group.

It is not certain whether Hall will agree to the offer, but until he does, United should remain optimistic about striking a deal.

Transfer verdict

Interestingly, after Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday, in which Hall impressed, Peter Schmeichel joked with Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle on Via Play:

“We’re looking to sign your left-back.” Jaissle responded: “No chance.”

Nothing is certain

The Newcastle boss responded as he should; he should not want to lose the gem that Hall is.

Yet as uncertain as the transfer market can be, he can hardly be certain the young fullback stays.

Given the weekend’s result and how keen United are to bolster their left-back options, they could yet send the Magpies a tempting bid, one too good to turn down.

A bid, plus a Hall transfer request, could abruptly turn things around, and Carrick could end up getting his top defensive target for a perfect summer transfer window.
