Liam Cooper has signed a one-year contract to rejoin Sheffield Wednesday, marking the start of what he describes as an exciting new era at Hillsborough.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the former Leeds United captain made 284 appearances for the Whites, including 64 in the Premier League, before moving on. He joined CSKA Sofia, then took a short-term deal at Wednesday in November last year, playing 14 Championship games as ownership and financial issues led to administration and relegation to League One.

Following a takeover by a US consortium, Cooper has hailed the arrival of the right people in the right roles and praised the new owners’ ideas and business know-how. He also pointed to more than 23,000 season tickets sold as a sign of momentum. He is relishing the first home game, which he expects to be a spectacle.

Wednesday’s sporting director views Cooper as integral to the rebuild, highlighting his impact in the dressing room last season. He is considered a leader in difficult circumstances and a mentor to younger players, someone who fits the culture the club want to create. The hierarchy believe he can contribute on and off the pitch this season.

Cooper, who captained Leeds to the Championship title under Marcelo Bielsa, now turns his focus to helping Wednesday move forward under the new ownership.
