Liam Cooper has rejoined Sheffield Wednesday on a one-year deal as the club embarks on a new era following a takeover by a US consortium.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the former Leeds United captain, a supporter of the club, lifted the Championship title under Marcelo Bielsa and departed after 284 appearances, including 64 in the Premier League.
After a spell with CSKA Sofia, Cooper joined Wednesday on a short-term deal in November last year and made 14 Championship appearances as ownership and financial problems led to administration and relegation to League One.
Cooper said he was delighted to be part of Wednesday’s reset, believing the right people are now in place and praising the new owners’ ideas and business know-how. He added that this is what fans, players and staff had wanted, noted sales of over 23,000 season tickets, and said he cannot wait to get started, predicting the first home game would be a spectacle.
The club’s sporting director said early feedback from players and staff underlined Cooper’s influence in the dressing room, describing him as a leader who mentored a young group. He said Cooper fits the culture they want to build, is a winner, and can contribute on and off the pitch, adding that the club are pleased to welcome him back.
