Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior has reacted to him deciding to heavily rotate his starting eleven to take on Wrexham last night.

The Blues boss was also heavily criticised for making this decision, with many Chelsea fans and pundits questioning why he changed it so much and perhaps believed that he wasn’t taking the FA Cup as seriously as anything else, with the big game against PSG in the Champions League coming up in the week.

I think the changes and rotation just needed more balance to it personally. It maybe didn’t need ALL of our star players not starting and most of them not even on the bench, and we very nearly paid the price for those decisions, being very lucky in the end to beat Wrexham in extra time after they had a man sent off.

Rosenior on why he chose rotation

Liam Rosenior speaks after the FA Cup win.

When asked whether the level of rotation risked disrupting the team, Rosenior said: “Yeah, that’s the risk that you take.

“We are going into a period of games where, for example, Romeo Lavia can be really important because he has to play minutes. We have to get him up to speed. Dario Essugo, we have to give him time on the pitch.

“[Lavia] is a top player, but you can’t expect perfection from a player who’s been out for four months.

“It’s not just about your first 11 or your first 12 players to get us to where we want to be. The only way our players and our squad are going to help us achieve what I think is possible is for them to be sharp and ready.

“I would say it’s not guaranteed that if you start your first 11, these games will come easier. And also the amount of games my squad have had in the last 18 months is the biggest in the world. So at some point I have to trust the group. They repaid my trust with the result tonight.”

Liam Rosenior was reacting after the Wrexham win last night and he spoke about a player who he handed a start to for the first time in a long time, Romeo Lavia, who made a return to play in midfield in tonight’s game.

You can watch probably the most important game that Chelsea scored to bring them back into the game after Josh Acheampong levelled the scores with a smashed finish from close range.
