Atlético Madrid suffered their second Liga F defeat of the season in Sunday’s away encounter with Costa Adeje Tenerife. Meanwhile, Caroline Weir netted a brace on matchday 12 to steer Real Madrid to three comfortable points against Eibar.
Tenerife extended their unbeaten run to five matches with an impressive display against Atlético Madrid. Elba Vergés produced a flicked header from Claudia Blanco’s driven cross to open the scoring in the 12th minute. The lead remained slender until Bicho made an immediate impact from the bench in the second period. The substitute scored within two minutes of her arrival, firing past Lola Gallardo to put the hosts in a commanding position. Gabriela García pulled a goal back in the 97th minute, but it proved to be too little too late for Atleti. As a result, the visitors slipped down to fourth, leaving them just a point ahead of fifth-placed Tenerife.
Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletic Club all won by three goals or more in the final round of Liga F fixtures before the international break.
Ewa Pajor fired Barcelona into an early lead in their meeting with basement side Levante. To everyone’s surprise inside the Estadi Ciutat de València, Pajor missed the chance to double her side’s advantage from the penalty spot, as she blazed harmlessly over the crossbar. The Blaugrana would get two more chances to go to the spot after Kika Nazareth extended the visitors’ lead. Clàudia Pina and Alexia Putellas both dispatched penalties to wrap up a resounding 4-0 win.
As for Real Madrid, they bounced back from their European defeat to Arsenal with a 3-0 success against Eibar. Caroline Weir netted a brace at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano, including a stunning curling effort from outside the box for her second. Rocío Gálvez then tapped in a third to end Real Madrid’s three-game winless run in all competitions.
Elsewhere, Athletic Club claimed their second league win of the season with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Granada. Ane Azkona scored twice inside the opening half-hour before Manoly Baquerizo halved the deficit on the stroke of half time. Daniela Agote restored Athletic’s two-goal cushion before Azkona pounced on a defensive mistake to seal her hat-trick. Granada’s difficult outing was compounded when Jujuba Cardozo’s red card was followed by Maite Zubieta’s late effort.
Real Sociedad moved up to second spot in the table with a 3-1 victory over Alhama. Emma Ramírez opened the scoring before Nerea Eizagirre spurned the chance to add a second from the penalty spot. However, Eizagirre quickly made amends for her penalty miss, prodding the ball past the goalkeeper after Alhama lost possession in their own box. The visitors pulled a goal back through Judith Caravaca, but their hopes of salvaging a draw were quashed by an Edna Imade penalty. The forward calmly slotted home after the referee spotted a handball in the box. As a result of the defeat, Alhama have now lost four consecutive Liga F matches.
Isina was made to rue a missed spot-kick in DUX Logroño’s away meeting with Madrid CFF. The forward saw her powerful penalty crash against the crossbar, drop on the line and bounce against the woodwork before being gathered by Paola Ulloa. After it was ruled the ball had not crossed the line, the scoreline remained goalless until Madrid CFF were awarded a penalty of their own in the 90th minute. Mônica kept her composure to dispatch the winning goal after the referee ruled that Emilie Nautnes had been fouled in the box.
Sevilla recorded a third consecutive league win against Deportivo La Coruña on matchday 12. Inma Gabarro found the breakthrough in the 17th minute, driving towards the edge of the box before drilling a fierce effort out of the goalkeeper’s reach. Deportivo’s Ainhoa Marín restored parity from the penalty spot, only for Sevilla to take the game away from the visitors in the second period. Gabarro netted her second goal of the contest, before Fatou Kanteh applied the finishing touches to a successful outing for the Andalusian side.
Meanwhile, the spoils were shared in the Catalan derby between Badalona and Espanyol. Itziar Pinillos produced a clever backheel to open the scoring after the ball dropped to her in the box from a corner. As the game drifted past the hour mark, Espanyol found the all-important equaliser through forward Ona Baradad, who calmly slid the ball past Antonia Canales to pick up a useful point for her side.
Real Madrid have announced they have agreed a new long-term contract with star attacker Linda Caicedo. The Colombia international has extended her stay in the Spanish capital until June 2031.
This one was close between Gabarro and Weir, but we have given the latter the nod for goal of the weekend. The Scotland international received the ball outside the box and set it out of her feet before whipping an unstoppable strike into the top corner.
