Ahead of Marseille’s trip to Lille on Friday evening, United States international Timothy Weah (25) delivered an emphatic endorsement of Ligue 1 – insisting the French top flight remains the world’s premier development league at a press conference attended by Get French Football News. “Ligue 1 is the best league in the world,” the US international insisted. “It’s the league with the most talent in the world. The matches are exciting to watch – it’s real football. It’s very tight at the top and that’s what you want in a league.”I’m very happy to be in Ligue 1, it’s done me a lot of good. I love football, I love playing every weekend. When you play at Lens, the supporters’ energy is incredible. At Nice too, even if things are tough for them at the moment. We can achieve great things with Marseille.”

Weah concluded by underlining France’s reputation as the birthplace of elite talent. “France is where you create stars. You have to come through here to become one. When you look at Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, or Paul Pogba – who came from Le Havre and became one of the best midfielders of all time – you have to come through here. Ligue 1 is the best league in the world.”GFFN | George Boxall – Reporting from Marseille
