There are now under two months to go until the start of the 2024/25 Ligue 1 season and there is still no one to broadcast it. The LFP have thus far failed to sell the broadcasting rights for the upcoming cycle (2024-29) and one-on-one discussions with the broadcasters are yet to bear fruit. It is a worrying situation for French football, however, there is now a crumb of comfort.
The LFP announced on Tuesday that Franco-Qatari broadcaster beIN Sports have bought the rights to broadcast Ligue 2 for the next five seasons. The broadcaster will pay an annual fee of €40m to do so, L’Équipe understands. LFP president Vincent Labrune praised the deal as “excellent news for all Ligue 2 sides”, and thanked beIN Sports for their continued commitment to French football.
Initially, the LFP had hoped to sell the broadcasting rights for Ligue 2 only after a broadcaster for Ligue 1 had been found, however, with no broadcaster yet to be found for France’s top flight and with time ticking away, selling the rights for the second division became a more urgent matter. Attention now turns back to the uncertain situation regarding the Ligue 1 rights, which the LFP will be looking to resolve as quickly as possible.
