Liverpool showed real resilience in a 4-1 comeback win over Newcastle at Anfield on Saturday night.

Despite going 1-0 via Anthony Gordon’s first goal in 33 matches, the Reds’ heads did not drop and Arne Slot’s side were able to work their way back into the game.

Some excellent play between Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike pulled Liverpool level and then Milos Kerkez played a sensational pass to set up Ektike’s brace, putting the Reds in the lead.

Despite the criticism the Premier League champions have faced in recent weeks, Liverpool’s mantle of ‘mentality monsters’ seemed fitting on Saturday night, and it was noticeable they were back to the Liverpool of old.

Even though they impressed with their performance, Liverpool did lack control for most of the match, creating a chaos that was reminiscent of Jurgen Klopp’s early days at Anfield.

Darren Fletcher picked up on the similarities on commentary for TNT Sports too.

“I think the biggest compliment you could pay them right now is this is like watching Jurgen Klopp’s team when they used to come running forward,” Fletcher said after Ekitike gave Liverpool the lead.

“That’s what they look like at the minute, it’s amazing what a difference a goal can make.”

After some of the performances Liverpool have put in this season, that is a great compliment.

Are Liverpool back to their best?

There is still some way for Slot’s side to go before they are back to their absolute best.

Some of that can be put down to injuries, with several starters missing and Dominik Szoboszlai being played out of position.

After convincing wins against Newcastle, Qarabag and Marseille in three of their last four matches, it does look like the Reds are finally getting back on track.

A disappointing loss to Bournemouth was the fourth of those fixtures though, and it would be naïve to assume that this side is at its best.

There is still another level for Liverpool to reach, but if they continue to perform like they did against Newcastle it won’t be too long before they reach it.
