Lincoln City have been fined £8,500 by the Football Association after supporters directed sectarian abuse towards Wrexham captain James McClean during a match at Sincil Bank on 3 May, BBC Sport has reported.

The FA ruled that the League One club failed to adequately control sections of its fanbase after “anti-Catholic chanting” was reported in two separate incidents. The governing body confirmed that anti-discrimination organisation Kick It Out first raised concerns on 7 May, prompting an internal investigation by Lincoln City in partnership with Lincolnshire Police.

In response, the club identified several individuals responsible and issued bans of varying lengths to seven supporters. Alongside the fine, Lincoln must now implement an action plan to prevent future incidents, including the creation of a confidential reporting system for abuse, an educational initiative with Kick It Out, and a clear protocol for handling discrimination aimed at players, staff, and officials.

Chief executive Liam Scully said the club “fully accepted” the FA’s ruling and emphasised Lincoln’s commitment to eradicating discriminatory behaviour, stating, “We recognise our responsibility. The key is combining education and sanctioning, finding the right balance to maintain our fantastic atmosphere without tolerating hate.”

Scully added that Lincoln would hold an open forum with supporters to discuss fan conduct and inclusivity. “We can have an environment that is passionate, welcoming, and safe for everyone,” he said.

The Imps also confirmed they are cooperating with the FA over “similar alleged behaviour” during their Carabao Cup tie against Chelsea last month.
