Lionel Messi missed a penalty against Austria on Monday that would have given him the World Cup scoring record outright.
L'Équipe highlighted the moment in its coverage.
The spot-kick followed a foul on Lautaro Martinez, who was held in the area by Mainz defender Stefan Posch.
The Albiceleste captain, 38, took responsibility but struck wide to the left of Alexander Schlager’s post. The goalkeeper went the right way yet did not need to touch the off-target effort.
Messi remains level with Miroslav Klose on 16 World Cup goals, having hit a hat-trick against Algeria to draw alongside the former Germany striker.
