Barcelona legend Lionel Messi may now be shining in the United States with Inter Miami, but his heart clearly remains tied to the Catalan giants where his story began.
Recently, the Argentine icon confirmed his contract renewal with Inter Miami until 2028, ensuring his stay in Major League Soccer for the foreseeable future.
Yet, amid this new chapter, Messi finds himself reflecting deeply on the passing of an era that was built in Barcelona’s golden years.
In an exclusive interview with Fabrizio Romano for Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass, Messi opened up about the retirements of his two closest companions from his time at Barça – Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
The trio shared countless historic moments in the Blaugrana shirt, forming the backbone of the side that dominated world football under Pep Guardiola and beyond.
After reuniting in Miami, their careers will now take separate paths.
When asked about his feelings, Messi admitted the emotional weight of seeing his former teammates step away from the game. “Honestly, it’s difficult,” he began.
First, because you see that you’ve dedicated your entire professional life to football, that the people around you are starting to leave, and you realise that your own time will also come soon,” he said.
For Messi, these retirements serve as a reminder that his own playing days are gradually approaching their twilight.
The Inter Miami captain also spoke about the emotional connection he shared with Busquets and Alba beyond the pitch.
“We were always in harmony on and off the field and shared a lot, even with our families. So it’s a loss of friends, both on and off the field.
“And of course, these are also difficult times for them, because leaving behind something you love is never easy,” Messi added.
For Barcelona fans, Messi’s reflections strike a familiar chord. They recall the unforgettable era when the Argentine magician, Busquets, and Alba orchestrated some of the most beautiful football ever witnessed at the Camp Nou.
Their chemistry defined a generation that will always be remembered.
