Liverpool is going through a very tough spell in the Premier League. The defeat to Brentford this weekend marked the fourth consecutive loss for the Reds, who now sit seventh in the table.

Some new signings, such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, are struggling to adapt. But even the established players are not performing up to standard—starting with captain Virgil van Dijk. On the podcast The Rest Is Football, English legend Alan Shearer was scathing about the Reds' defense:

They are poor all over the pitch. The defense is a disaster. Van Dijk and Konaté were dreadful against Brentford.

In Shearer's view, the two center-backs have lost their solidity, which is undermining the whole team. His colleague Micah Richards shares this assessment but believes Van Dijk is not getting enough support:

Yes, they were poor. But Van Dijk needs support. In the past, he often saved the team. Now, it’s up to Konaté to do that, but it’s just not happening.
