Liverpool have been dealt yet another injury blow this season as Alexander Isak missed Sunday’s clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The striker is dealing with a groin issue that has ruled him out of action for this weekend, although Reds boss Arne Slot suggested it wasn’t a serious problem.

The Sweden international is expected to play again before the end of the season, but it is “too much” for him to play against the Red Devils.

“I don’t think in general it’s a surprise that after we pick up injuries, that has happened so many times this season, no one can be surprised that it happened now again,” Slot told Sky Sports.

“But Alex, it wasn’t much, but unfortunately it was too much for him to be be able to play. And Alisson hasn’t trained with us yet, so that that makes it quite simple. We’re hoping for him to be ready next week but we have to wait and see how the week will go, and the same can be said about Alex. We’re hoping to have him back next week, but that’s small margins, as it always is.”

Isak only recently returned to action after a long-term lay off due to a broken leg he suffered in December, limiting him to just 13 appearances in the Premier League since his £125 million move from Newcastle United last summer.

With Mo Salah also out injured, Ryan Gravenberch and Jeremie Frimpong were brought into the starting lineup. Cody Gakpo started up front in Isak’s stead.

Liverpool’s lengthy injury list also includes: Hugo Ekitike, Alisson Becker, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo, Giovanni Leoni, Milos Kerkez and Jayden Danns.

Meanwhile, Matheus Cunha was deemed fit to start for United after missing the Brentford game with a hip injury. The Brazilian attacker marked his return with the opening goal in the game, before Benjamin Sesko doubled their lead in the first half.
