Alexis Mac Allister struck a stunning second-half winner as Liverpool came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 and begin their Champions League campaign with victory at Anfield.

Liverpool gradually found their rhythm and drew level five minutes before the interval. Milos Kerkez helped win possession back before Ronald Araujo’s clever flick found Dominik Szoboszlai, who kept his composure to slot into the bottom corner.

The hosts came flying out after the restart and completed the turnaround in the 50th minute. Alexander Isak inadvertently diverted the ball into Mac Allister’s path, and the Argentina international unleashed a powerful left-footed strike from the edge of the area that flew beyond Jan Oblak.

Atletico pressed for an equaliser, but Liverpool stood firm despite late pressure. Oblak denied a late effort from Munoz, while Liverpool also saw a stoppage-time goal ruled out for offside.

The victory gives Andoni Iraola his first Champions League win as Liverpool manager.
