Liverpool climbed to fifth in the Premier League after turning things around in style to beat Newcastle United 4-1 at Anfield.
Both sides started with confidence, but it was Newcastle who looked sharper early on. Their aggressive approach unsettled Liverpool and was rewarded when Anthony Gordon finished a swift break to put the visitors ahead in the 36th minute.
Rather than panic, the hosts gradually found their rhythm, with Florian Wirtz growing in influence between the lines and Hugo Ekitike beginning to stretch the Newcastle back line.
The equaliser came before the break as Wirtz glided into the box and cut the ball back for Ekitike, who bundled it home with 41 minutes on the clock
Just two minutes later, the Frenchman struck again, racing onto a perfectly weighted pass from Milos Kerkez and beating Nick Pope with a clever outside-of-the-boot finish to flip the game on its head against the club that twice tried to sign him.
The mood inside Anfield changed, and Liverpool came out flying after the restart.
Ekitike almost completed his hat-trick after capitalising on a defensive error, while Alisson was forced into a brilliant save to deny Harvey Barnes and keep Newcastle at arm’s length.
Any lingering doubt was ended midway through the half when Wirtz arrived onto Mohamed Salah’s cutback and guided a first-time finish into the corner to make it 3-1, continuing his excellent run of form.
The hosts eased off late on but still found time for a fourth. Ibrahima Konate, back in the side after a difficult personal week, tapped in from close range and was visibly emotional as Anfield roared its approval.
The win lifts Liverpool above Manchester United, while Newcastle slip to 10th and now face an uphill battle in their push for Champions League football.
