Liverpool have stepped up efforts to secure the long-term future of Ibrahima Konaté, with negotiations over a new contract continuing to develop. The 26-year-old centre-back, who has become a cornerstone of the club’s defensive structure, is now firmly in focus as the Reds seek to protect one of their most valuable assets.
Konaté, a graduate of the FC Sochaux Academy, joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for a reported €40 million fee. Since then, he has grown into one of Europe’s leading right-sided defenders, forming a formidable partnership alongside Virgil van Dijk. His current deal, signed upon arrival, is entering its final stretch, prompting Liverpool to act decisively.
Discussions over a renewal began last year, but initial conversations did not progress smoothly. An early contract offer in December was understood to fall short of reflecting Konaté’s importance within the squad. At that point, the French international prioritised Liverpool’s pursuit of domestic glory, placing negotiations on hold until the season’s conclusion. That campaign ended with Liverpool equalling Manchester United’s record of 20 league titles — a triumph that reinforced Konaté’s significance.

In recent months, Liverpool have revisited their position. Sources indicate that revised proposals have been tabled on multiple occasions, with the most recent offer presented around a fortnight ago. The adjustments are designed to bring terms closer to Konaté’s standing as a first-choice defender and regular starter.
While talks remain ongoing, confidence is growing within the club that a breakthrough will be achieved. The player’s representatives are engaged in dialogue with the Liverpool hierarchy, and although fine details still need to be resolved, there is a shared recognition of his importance to the team’s present and future.
As with any top-level player nearing the end of a contract, rival clubs are watching developments closely. Real Madrid are among those monitoring Konaté’s situation, though at this stage there is no suggestion of formal contact. Nevertheless, Liverpool are well aware that hesitation could encourage serious interest from elsewhere.
For Konaté, the decision may ultimately rest on a combination of financial terms, sporting ambition, and personal satisfaction. At 26, he is entering what many consider the prime years for a central defender, and securing stability at club level is likely to be viewed as essential.
Arne Slot’s Liverpool are preparing for a new cycle, one that requires balance between continuity and evolution. Securing Konaté on improved terms would provide a crucial pillar for that process. Beyond his athleticism and tactical intelligence, his influence within the dressing room has steadily increased, marking him as more than just a defensive figure.
The coming weeks will be critical, with Liverpool determined to finalise matters before external pressure builds. For now, optimism prevails at Anfield that Konaté will commit his peak years to the club, anchoring their back line well into the future.
