Liverpool struggled to break down Burnley but again found a way to win as Mo Salah scored a last-minute penalty.

Salah smashed his 94th minute penalty into the top corner to sink Burnley and give the Reds a 1-0 win at Turf Moor after Hannibal had been punished for a handball.

There was no room for Alexander Isak in Arne Slot’s squad. The Swede signed on deadline day from Newcastle but his manager did not feel he was ready to feature for the Reds, and Liverpool looked like they missed the instincts that they expect the striker to bring to the club when he eventually plays for them.

Hugo Ekitike started his fourth match in a row for the club up front but could not get past an impressive Burnley defensive set up.

Lesley Ugochukwu’s 15th minute foul on Alexis MacAllister earned the midfielder a yellow card, and he later picked up a second one which meant Burnley had to play the closing stages with ten men.

Milos Kerkez was another Liverpool player that struggled and it only took 37 minutes for boss Arne Slot to bring him off for the more experienced Andy Robertson.

The closest Liverpool came in the first half was on 43 minutes through Ekitike, who took the ball past Josh Laurent on the left-hand side before his ball across the area rolled just past the post.

In the second half Liverpool improved with Burnley spending most of the half penned into their own area, but could not find the net.

Strikes from Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai from range both tested Martin Dubravka in the Burnley goal but Liverpool failed to create clear cut chances.

Federico Chiesa replaced Hugo Ekitike with 20 minutes to go and his 72nd minute header could have broken the deadlock but went the wrong side of the post.

Ugochukwu’s game ended early as he received a second yellow card six minutes from time after he took out Florian Wirtz just outside the area.

And in the 93rd minute, a handball from Hannibal Mejbri allowed Salah to step up and fire Liverpool to another victory to maintain their perfect start.

Liverpool have always found a way this season and the Egyptian’s winner followed in the footsteps of Rio Ngumoha against Newcastle, Szoboszlai’s against Arsenal and Chiesa’s in their opening game to sink Bournemouth, but their lack of chances created will be a concern for Slot.
