Midfielder has hit out at speculation that he is eyeing an iconic shirt number at Liverpool
Florian Wirtz has one clear shirt number alternative should he complete a summer transfer to Liverpool.
The Germany international is subject of interest from the Premier League champions, though they have seen two bids rejected by Bayer Leverkusen - including a club-record £109m offer.
That said, negotiations have continued between the two clubs this week and the hope is that a third offer - closer to Leverkusen’s reported £126m asking price - will lead to an agreement being struck.
However, whilst talks have been taking place, reports in Germany claimed Wirtz would like to wear the No.10 at Liverpool. This is the shirt number he has worn for Leverkusen across the last two seasons.
The issue with that is at Liverpool, the No.10 is currently worn by Alexis Mac Allister. Therefore he who would have to agree to a change of shirt number ahead of the new season for Wirtz to get his wish.
On his Instagram Stories, he wrote: “Who says I want the 10. I respect players. Don't believe everything what's written.”
So if Wirtz does end up joining Liverpool and has no plans to ask for the No.10 shirt, what squad number could he take? Well, there is one particular vacant squad number at Anfield that he could choose.
When Wirtz broke into the first-team picture at Leverkusen he wore the No.27 and kept that for four seasons before upgrading to No.10 following the departure of Kerem Demirbay ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
At Liverpool, the No.27 has previously been worn by cult hero Divock Origi but has been vacant since Darwin Nunez moved over to the No.9 in the summer of 2023.
