Liverpool have suffered an international break setback as Alexander Isak has withdrawn from the Sweden squad and will return to Merseyside for assessment.

The club said in a statement that the striker is heading back due to a minor injury, will miss Sweden's remaining three fixtures this window, and will be assessed by medical staff at the AXA Training Centre.

Isak completed 90 minutes and scored in Sweden's 2-1 win over Romania on Friday. He will now sit out Monday's meeting with Poland, plus League B Group 4 ties against Bosnia-Herzegovina on October 2 and the Romania return on October 5.

He has struck four times in five Premier League matches, more than half of Liverpool's league haul. His latest was the winner at Bournemouth, already eclipsing his return from a difficult debut season at Anfield.

Several clubs have been hit during this extended window, with Arsenal and Sunderland also counting forward injuries. Kai Havertz was forced off for Germany on Thursday, while Brian Brobbey picked up a knock in the same Germany-Netherlands clash in Amsterdam. With the league not back until the second weekend of October, Liverpool have a brief window to work on Isak's fitness.
