Last week Mohamed Salah’s Egypt came within a whisker of eliminating defending champions Argentina from the FIFA World Cup at the round-of-16 stage.

Salah’s side had been 2-0 up going into the closing stages - before some questionable referee calls and a late winner from Enzo Fernandez extinguished their dreams.

But the African representatives bowed out with their heads held high despite the loss. Several players - including goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir - acquitted themselves well and turned the heads of observers.

And perhaps the biggest example of a breakout star during the Egypt World Cup campaign was Haissem Hassan.

Hassan a breakout Egypt World Cup sensation

The wing wizard - who has just been relegated to the Segunda with Real Oviedo in Spain - was arguably the best player on the pitch versus Argentina.

His ball-carrying ability and fearlessness in one-v-one duels are very attractive characteristics and it’s led Andoni Iraola to sit up and take notice.

Liverpool have now entered talks to acquire the France-born wideman - whose contract is due to expire in 2027.

That’s according to a report in Fichajes in Spain - which claims the new Liverpool head coach sees the 24-year-old as an IDEAL bargain wing rotation candidate for the season ahead.

Liverpool hold talks over signing Hassan from Real Oviedo

“Liverpool have entered into formal talks with Real Oviedo to sign Haissem Hassan in the summer transfer window of 2026, a lightning-fast move with which the Anfield club seeks to bolster its attacking options following the painful departure of Mohamed Salah,” the report reads.

“The British club's management intends to capitalize on Asturias' relegation to the Spanish second division to acquire the 24-year-old French-Egyptian winger for less than the €12 million stipulated in his original release clause.

“The Tolosa-born coach believes that Haissem Hassan's direct style will inject the necessary dynamism and attacking flair to revitalise the team off the bench.”

Haissem Hassan: Situation summary

Haissem Hassan is a left‑footed attacker who operates off the flank or as a hybrid wide playmaker, relying on close control, sharp changes of direction and one‑v‑one craft rather than power.

He likes to receive between the lines, drive at full‑backs and combine with short, quick passes, and his game is built around dribbling and chance creation rather than volume shooting or penalty‑box finishing.

He joined Real Oviedo from Villarreal in August 2024 on a three‑year deal running to June 2027, after a productive loan at Sporting Gijón in the Segunda.

Since then he has played heavy minutes in the second tier and then La Liga, offering steady output in assists and progressive carries, enough to be viewed internally as a long‑term attacking reference rather than a short‑term stop‑gap.

At international level, Hassan’s World Cup showcased the best version of his profile: used predominantly from the left, he attacked full‑backs relentlessly, ranking highly for take‑ons and progressive carries in the Egypt side while also working back diligently without the ball.

He wasn’t the headline goalscorer, but his ability to carry Egypt up the pitch, win fouls and create separation in transition made him one of their more valuable connective pieces between midfield and the front line.
