Liverpool make contact to sign Brazilian star

For a while Liverpool had a very strong Brazilian contingent.

From Philippe Coutinho to Robert Firmino. Later, Alisson and Fabinho. Not to mention Claudio Taffarel, who was the club's goalkeeping coach and Marcelo Pitaluga, an academy goalkeeper.

But over the years that contingent has dwindled. First Coutinho left, then Pitaluga, Fabinho and Firmino. Ultimately Taffarel also left for pastures new leaving just Alisson as the sole representative of the Reds' Brazilian cohort.

Even he may not be at the club forever. Liverpool have already prepared his replacement in Giorgi Mamardashvili and it would not be a surprise to see Alisson being on the move next summer or the summer after that.

If that happens Liverpool will be without a Brazilian for the first time in a while.

Or will they? Richard Hughes may already be working on a plan to make sure that won't happen.

The Reds have been keen to expand their recruitment over the last year or so. In fact, Liverpool have grown their scouting network to cover more areas around the globe with the purpose of being able to spot and sign young talent at a much earlier age.

The goal is for Liverpool to have an edge over their rivals with Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards very much keen to explore alternative markets.

One area where the Reds haven't really dipped their toes in yet is the South American market. Liverpool unlike rivals such as Manchester City and Chelsea do not tend to sign players directly from the continent.

But this could change.
