Fahey retired at the end of last season so new Reds manager Gareth Taylor had to choose a new player to lead the team.

Grace Fisk named new Liverpool captain

New Liverpool captain Grace Fisk has been at the club for three years now.

Fisk joined the Reds from West Ham in 2023 and was quick to make a good impression at the club, earning her a contract extension at the end of last season.

Speaking after being handed the armband, Fisk said: “It is such a huge honour for me to be appointed as club captain here at Liverpool. It was an amazing feeling when I was asked to take the armband.”

“Obviously I’ve not known Gaz that long, so for him to select me means a lot. It’s nothing I would ever have expected or was even thinking about.”

Gareth Taylor was appointed as Liverpool manager at the beginning of August and with the season starting this weekend he had to make a quick decision on the new captain.

Fisk featured in 17 of Liverpool’s 22 WSL matches last season, with only an injury preventing the 27-year-old from playing every game.

“I don’t think I could ever fill Niamh Fahey’s shoes, but I will try to lead the team in my own way, be there for everyone and show our supporters how much this means to me.

“We have such a strong and committed group of staff and players, including the senior leadership group, and I’m really looking forward to the journey ahead together.”

Niamh Fahey retired from football at the end of last season having spent five years as club captain.

After finishing 7th in the WSL last year, expectations on Liverpool are much higher this season.

The Reds kick off their 2025/26 campaign with the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Sunday, 7th September.
