Liverpool news: Major name returns in wake of massive Michael Edwards exit

Liverpool have welcomed a major name back to the fold after Michael Edwards' shock exit.

Michael Edwards is out at FSG and is no longer a part of the setup around Liverpool. Edwards, who was the Reds' sporting director between 2016 and 2022, returned as FSG's CEO of football back in early 2024.

However, the main part of that job was to oversee a multi-club project. That simply hasn't come about, with FSG seemingly abandoning plans to buy more football clubs.

Edwards, then, didn't feel their part of the bargain was held up and he's now quit. It's something that will naturally rock Liverpool given Edwards hired most of the people running things right now.

Richard Hughes, the current sporting director, has known Edwards for over 20 years and was hired by him in 2024. Both will likely be out the door before the end of 2026.

A bit of chaos, then, and Liverpool now need to figure out a new structure going forward. Perhaps that means promoting from within but it could also mean a hiring from outside - it's entirely unclear what FSG wish to do from here.

The Athletic reports that one decision has been made, though. Mike Gordon, the president of FSG and the man who oversaw the football side of the company before Edwards' return, is now back in that role.

It's something that does offer continuity, at least, even if the report makes it clear that Gordon had wanted to take a step back. The failure to find a solid role for Edwards, though, has dragged him back in.

For now, at least.

Of course, we're in the middle of a transfer window and so the search right now is for elite players to join the squad. We don't believe Liverpool will make any major background moves until after the window shuts, then, and possibly until Hughes has left.

And will Edwards even need replacing? On the face of it, no, as there's no multi-club project. But with Gordon actively seeking a withdrawn role, he may want to hire someone to oversee the big picture of football within FSG.

After all, someone needs to hire Hughes's replacement. It won't be Edwards.
