Ronald Araujo debut offers Liverpool one clear positive after Newcastle draw

Liverpool left St James’ Park with a 2-2 draw, a point rescued late by Dominik Szoboszlai from the penalty spot, and that probably tells you two things. First, there was character. Second, there were still too many familiar flaws.

Andoni Iraola’s first competitive game as Liverpool head coach did not provide a clean statement of intent. Newcastle found space too easily, moved through midfield too cleanly and exposed a defensive shape that still looks like a work in progress. That will concern supporters more than the result itself, because structural problems tend to linger if they are not fixed quickly.

One player, however, emerged with genuine credit. Ronald Araujo’s debut off the bench gave Liverpool some badly needed authority at the back. As Pat Nevin on BBC Radio put it: “There wasn’t a great deal in it but you can see the weaknesses that Liverpool had last season have not gone away. The defence doesn’t look quite there.” He then added: “I would say Ronald Araujo came on and looked quite impressive. very, very powerful and very, very strong. He might be a massive part of the answer.”

Araujo debut brings needed authority

That assessment is fair. Araujo did not arrive and transform the contest, but he did something almost as useful, he looked reliable immediately. For a defender making his first official Liverpool appearance, that matters. There was no fuss, no rashness, no obvious panic. He competed physically, handled duels well and looked comfortable with the intensity.

That should not be a surprise. He has elite-level experience and, crucially, he has the frame and aggression to survive Premier League football. Plenty of defenders arrive with reputation and technique. Fewer arrive with a profile that already looks suited to the division’s pace and physical demands.

Liverpool defence still needs fixing

It would be naive to pretend one encouraging substitute appearance solves everything. Liverpool still looked vulnerable in wider areas and too easy to run through centrally. That is not about one player. It is about organisation, spacing and reaction speed, all of which need sharpening under Iraola.

There were also other debutants involved, and Jeremy Jacquet had moments of encouragement before making way. That means the selection picture for Nottingham Forest is not straightforward. Still, Araujo gave the manager something important, a reason to think there may already be a practical solution within the squad.

Next step for Iraola and Liverpool

The sensible view is simple. Liverpool were unconvincing, Newcastle exposed old issues, and a late equaliser prevented a poor opening result. Yet Araujo’s debut was a tangible positive. If Liverpool are going to become more secure defensively, he looks capable of playing a serious role in that process.

For now, that is all it is, a promising start. But for a team still searching for defensive certainty, promising starts can become significant very quickly.

Our View

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this felt like one of those afternoons where you take the point, take the lesson and move on. Nobody should be sugar-coating the defensive issues because they were obvious. Newcastle got at Liverpool far too easily at times, and that part of the performance will have annoyed Iraola more than anyone.

That said, there is a real reason for encouragement here, and it is Araujo. Liverpool fans have seen enough fragile defending over the past year to know what authority looks like when it walks onto a pitch. He looked strong, assertive and ready for the fight. That matters. Supporters respond to defenders who enjoy defending, and there was a bit of that in his cameo.

The biggest positive is that he already looks like somebody who can help raise the floor of this Liverpool defence. Not every new signing settles quickly, especially at the back, but this had the look of a player who understands the demands. If he stays fit, there is every chance he becomes a key figure very quickly.

It is early, nobody sensible is calling him the full answer after one appearance, but Liverpool fans will absolutely take this sign. In a match where the team looked loose too often, Araujo looked like substance. Right now, that is worth plenty.
