Alexis Mac Allister Contract Update Leaves Liverpool With an Awkward Problem

Liverpool have a contract issue on their hands, and Alexis Mac Allister has said it plainly. Speaking before the Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid, the midfielder revealed he has not been offered a new Liverpool contract and admitted the situation has left him “very, very sad.”

That matters. Mac Allister is not a squad extra and he is not making noise from the margins. He is a central player, a World Cup winner, and one of the few midfielders in this Liverpool side who brings control as well as intensity. When a player of that level says he feels overlooked, the club cannot pretend it is background noise.

Mac Allister makes Liverpool contract stance clear

The Argentine is now into the final two years of his current deal. While Liverpool have moved to hand fresh terms to Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai, Mac Allister says his camp has been told there is no offer on the table at present. That is the story here, not spin, not optics.

He said, “There was a chance (I could leave in the summer) as everyone knows. I received the news the club had made a decision not to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad.

“Everybody can see I give 100 per cent for this club every single day in training.

“I have good games and bad games like everyone and I always give my best.”

Liverpool midfielder stays committed despite frustration

There is frustration, clearly, though there is also no threat. Mac Allister did not posture, did not agitate and did not try to force a move. In fact, he went the other way and stressed his commitment to Liverpool.

He said, “I see Dominik (Szoboszlai) and Ryan (Gravenberch) renewing their contracts and that makes me happy as they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me sad as I didn’t get mine. But there is still time.

“The fans don’t need to worry as I will give 100 per cent until the last day I am here. We will see what happens.

“There were options to leave this summer and right now, I’m in the right club and I have the right mindset to give 100 per cent to this club.

“It will depend on how I peform this year. It’s (the club’s) right to make a decision. But fans don’t need to worry as I’ll give 100% and maybe they change their minds (the club).”

Champions League focus will not hide contract tension

This is where Liverpool need clarity. Leaving a key midfielder in limbo rarely gets cleaner with time. Mac Allister has done his part by keeping the message simple. He is disappointed, he feels undervalued, and he is still fully committed. That is professional. It also puts the next move squarely on the club.

For now, the Champions League and the domestic season roll on. The contract tension does too.
