Cody Gakpo Transfer Latest: Why Tottenham Believe Liverpool Forward Can Thrive Again

Tottenham’s interest in Cody Gakpo is gathering attention as the summer market develops, with the Liverpool forward viewed as a player capable of rediscovering top form in a different environment.

At 27, Gakpo remains highly regarded across Europe despite a mixed 2025-26 campaign at Anfield. Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi is understood to admire the Netherlands international, who is among several attacking options under consideration as Tottenham look to reshape their frontline before the new season.

Tottenham interest in Cody Gakpo explained

The belief in north London is that Gakpo still possesses the quality that made him so effective during Liverpool’s Premier League-winning 2024-25 season. That stop-start rhythm has been central to the conversation around his future. There is a feeling among those who know his game well that regular selection and stronger backing from his coach would bring greater consistency in his performances.

Dutch legend give his view

Dutch legend Gullit believes that a move to work with someone who put an arm around the attacker, like De Zerbi, without the constant threat of being benched after any mistake would see Gakpo restored to the player who scored 18 goals with seven assists the previous season as Liverpool won the title.

“His main issue has been consistency of minutes – in one week, out the next. I still rate him highly. During their title-winning campaign, he was superb,” Gullit told NY Sports Day.

Liverpool transfer stance and replacement plans

Any Cody Gakpo transfer would require Tottenham to commit significant funds, with Liverpool under no pressure to sell unless terms were attractive and a replacement was lined up. Bradley Barcola is one of the attacking names being monitored as Liverpool assess possible market opportunities.

From Liverpool’s side, the calculation would centre on squad balance, value and timing. Andoni Iraola has only recently taken charge and decisions on senior attackers are expected to be made carefully.

Netherlands form offers encouragement

Gakpo’s output for the Netherlands remains a major reason why interest has not faded. Across the World Cup and qualifying campaign, he scored seven times and added five assists, underlining his ability to deliver when trusted in a defined role.

One prominent Dutch voice has argued that the forward’s trajectory can be revived with the right support, saying:
