Liverpool have the chance to go into the November international break in second place in the Premier League if they can maintain their recent revival by beating Manchester City on Sunday.

The Reds recorded a pair of 2-0 wins over Pep Guardiola’s team last season as they dethroned the Cityzens as champions, with these two clubs dividing up the past eight top-flight titles between them.

Arne Slot will be without the likes of Alisson Becker and Jeremie Frimpong for the visit to the Etihad Stadium, although Alexander Isak’s return to training on Friday has raised hopes that he might be involved in the matchday squad at least for this evening.

Speaking of Scandinavian strikers, Liverpool’s defence will need to be at their absolute best today to stifle the threat of one Erling Haaland, who has just the 27 goals for club and country combined over the past three months.

Liverpool starting XI to face Man City

Slot has gone with the very same team which began the 1-0 win over Real Madrid last Tuesday.

Giorgi Mamardashvili continues between the sticks, with the familiar partnership of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate ahead of him. At right-back, Conor Bradley will hope to build upon his outstanding performance against Los Blancos, while Andy Robertson keeps his place on the other flank.

Liverpool have been much improved since the restoration of the Ryan Gravenberch-Alexis Mac Allister midfield axis, and the in-form Dominik Szoboszlai – a scorer at the Etihad on the Reds’ previous visit nine months ago – is in from the start again today.

Hugo Ekitike leads the line in attack, with Mo Salah to his right and Florian Wirtz again preferred to Cody Gakpo on the left wing.

Isak is included among the substitutes, with Federico Chiesa, Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha all ready to be called upon if LFC are in need of goals in the latter stages.
