Liverpool up to fifth after scoring five against Hammers | OneFootball

Liverpool have moved up to fifth place in the Premier League after an entertaining 5-2 win over West Ham United.

It took just under five minutes for the Reds to take the lead when a corner from the left in front of the Kop End resulted in some head tennis as West Ham failed to clear their lines before Hugo Ekitiké managed to squeeze his shot past Mads Hermansen at the near post.

That lead was doubled in the 24th minute after another corner from Dominik Szoboszlai was headed in by Virgil van Dijk.

The Hammers had a brilliant chance to pull one back a few minutes later when Alisson Becker had a moment of head-loss and passed the ball to Jarrod Bowen about 10 yards from goal. Fortunately for the Liverpool goalkeeper, Bowen clearly wasn't expecting it and his attempt to control the ball bounced back to Becker.

Corners proved to be West Ham's weakness once again just before the break. This time a delivery from the right that led to Alexis Mac Allister rifling the ball into the roof of the net.

The visitors pulled one back shortly after the restart as the ball bounced to El Hadji Diouf on the left with the full-back putting in a low cross across the face of the goal that Tomás Soucek tapped in unmarked.

Liverpool should have restored their advantage soon after when Cody Gakpo fluffed his lines from close range but the Dutch international made up for it later when he cut in from the right before tucking the ball into the corner.

The deficit was reduced to two once again in the 75th minute as West Ham gave Liverpool a taste of their own medicine with a corner delivery that Taty Castellanos nodded in.

Arne Slot's team eventually killed the game off for good in the 83rd minute when Jeremie Frimpong picked up the ball from the right and was probably going for a cross when Axel Disasi's attempt at a block found the back of the net instead.

It was a game that should have been far less complicated for Liverpool after taking a three-goal lead into the break but regardless the Reds move above Chelsea into fifth place while the Irons continue to struggle in the drop zone.
