Arne Slot has revealed that Liverpool defender Joe Gomez “might” require surgery following a devastating hamstring injury, leaving his season hanging in the balance. The setback, described by Slot as lasting for “quite a long time,” adds to the defender’s unfortunate history of injuries.

Gomez suffered the latest blow during his FA Cup return against Plymouth, where he lasted mere minutes before aggravating the same hamstring issue that had already cost him 10 matches earlier in the campaign.
With only three months left in the 2024/25 season, speculation surrounds whether Gomez will grace the pitch again this term. Offering insight, Slot commented: “Joe will take quite a long time. He is going to be out for numerous weeks because of a hamstring injury,” he stated during his pre-Aston Villa press conference.
Slot praised Gomez’s determination: “He tries to do everything to be with the team, he worked really hard to come back and then the first game he came back after two or three minutes we saw him making a sprint. Now he’s out for weeks again. That’s always very hard for a player, in every part of the season, let alone in the part of the season everybody is looking forward to.”
The Liverpool manager hinted at a potential return late in the campaign but refused to dismiss the possibility of surgery: “He will miss large parts of the end of the season, but we expect him to be back in the end phase of the season,” Slot added. “He might [need surgery], but that’s still something we have to assess.”
This season has been a frustrating one for Gomez, with only 17 appearances and 863 minutes played – his lowest total since his 2015/16 debut season. Persistent injuries have been a recurring theme throughout his Liverpool career.
As Liverpool chase a successful end to Arne Slot’s inaugural season, the hope remains that Gomez can return to contribute in the final stages. Despite his misfortune, he remains Liverpool’s longest-serving current player, a symbol of resilience and loyalty.
The coming months could be pivotal for Gomez’s future, with his injury record inevitably raising questions about his long-term role. However, his commitment and talent make it hard to imagine a Liverpool side without him. Fans will be hoping this is not the final chapter of his Anfield story.
