Injured star set for return to action after long spell on sidelines
Joe Gomez has been declared fit for Liverpool’s Carabao Cup tie with Tottenham on Tuesday.
The England international defender is yet to play this season due to a muscle strain picked up in July but Andoni Iraola has confirmed the defender would be available for the third-round tie at Anfield.
Speaking on Monday, the Reds’ boss said: “Joe is training with the team and is available for tomorrow. It's a matter of deciding how much he can play.”
The Spaniard also revealed that Giorgi Mamardashvili would start in goal, replacing Alisson Becker.
That won’t be the only change to the Reds’ lineup with Iraola hinting that “we will see tomorrow players we haven't seen”.
Return: Joe Gomez
That could be good news for Wataru Endo. The Japanese midfielder is yet to make it onto the pitch this season but has been an unused substitute.
Rio Ngumoha looks a likely starter after he came on during the second half against Fulham, while fellow youngsters Trey Nyoni and Lewis Koumas could both make their first starts of the campaign following recent sub roles.
However, if Iraola opts for more experience and wants to give his new signings more game-time, Bradley Barcola could make his third start in a week.
With Hugo Ekitike still out injured, Alexander Isak is the Reds’ only senior striking option, although Cody Gakpo can operate through the middle.
Conor Bradley won’t be involved although Iraola did report he has now begun working with the ball following his knee surgery.
Predicted Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Mamardashvili; Frimpong, Araujo, van Dijk, Tsimikas; Mac Allister, Endo; Ngumoha, Nyoni, Munoz; Isak
