Liverpool expect Florian Wirtz to miss both meetings with Wolves this week, with a Champions League return at Galatasaray on 10 March the aim.

In his Monday press conference, Arne Slot said Wirtz would likely sit out the two Molineux fixtures to be ready for Europe, and, according to Thisisanfield, he hopes to have him back sometime next week, perhaps a little earlier or later.

The 22-year-old has been out since a back problem in the warm-up before the recent trip to Nottingham Forest. Hopes of featuring in Friday’s FA Cup tie have been pushed back.

Wirtz has been a near ever-present this season, with only six outfield players logging more minutes, consistency that has been checked by this spinal irritation.

In his absence, Dominik Szoboszlai is set to continue as the No 10 after shining in the 5-2 win at West Ham. With Wataru Endo, James McConnell and Stefan Bajcetic also unavailable, midfield options are stretched.

The situation could hand further chances to academy talents, with Trey Nyoni tipped for more FA Cup minutes and Rio Ngumoha potentially seeing an expanded role as Slot manages workloads before Istanbul. The medical team are reportedly working to have Wirtz fit for the intimidating Galatasaray assignment, which could prove pivotal to Liverpool’s progression.
